Herb Elliott is known as the “greatest miler of all time” and is an icon of Australian sport. In 1958 Herb became the youngest athlete to break the four-minute mile. That same year, he smashed the world 1500m record in Dublin by nearly three seconds and went on to win the mile and 880 yards events at the Cardiff Empire Games (forerunner to today’s Commonwealth Games). Herb’s greatest result was at the Rome Olympic Games in 1960 where he cemented his place as an Australian hero by winning the Gold medal in the 1500m and breaking his own world record in a time of 3:35.6.
Following his successful athletic career Herb moved on to a similarly impressive business career. Herb was Managing Director of Puma, in Australia in 1986 until 1995 and then CEO of Puma North America from 1995 to 1997. In 1997 he returned to Australia and joined the Australian Olympic Committee. He retired from the AOC in March 2001 and since then has accepted directorships of Pacific Dunlop Ltd., Sydney Olympic Park Authority and Richmond Football Club.
